You can probably tell from the frigid temperatures and all the snow we’ve been having that it’s January in Birmingham... Wow, it’s been cold... Brrrr! The best way to stay warm on these frigid winter nights is to sit by the fire, drink a glass of wine, and enjoy some comfort food like say, one of Kathy G’s famous Panini sandwiches.
They’re fantastic for one, for two, or even a big Super Bowl party. What’s great about Panini sandwiches is there are no rules. You can literally put anything you want into them so long as one of the ingredients is cheese - Which, when melted, ties the whole creation together. Though brushing your sandwich with Extra Virgin olive oil isn’t mandatory, it certainly makes a good Panini perfect and turns a perfect Panini into a life-changing dining experience.

We LOVE LOVE LOVE heading down to Tuscaloosa – Especially the wide-open space of Smith Hall on the campus of the University of Alabama campus. January 15th provided us just the opportunity to visit good ol’ ‘Bama as the gorgeous Emily and debonair Michael celebrated their wedding with nearly 200 family and friends. The menu was distinctively Southern and particularly delicious with Pecan Fried Oysters, Glazed Short Ribs atop Parmesan Polenta, Flash Fried Shrimp Cakes with Creole Aioli, and Fried Green Tomatoes topped with Feta Cheese. Though the most unique facet of the occasion was the simplest… Being as the occasion took place on the Alabama campus, the newly minted Wilson couple wanted their guests to enjoy “Game Day Dogs” so we happily obliged – Setting up a Crimson and White ‘Bama themed “Rah Rah Table” with a giant Nick Saban cut-out and preparing 200 foil-wrapped hot dogs with mustard, ketchup, sour kraut and the couple’s favorite side, Golden Flake Chips in individual bags. What a great wedding and what a great couple!! Congrats again, Emily and Michael!
In the coldest month of the year, things are really heating up at the Gardens Café in the friendly confines of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Nearly one third of all grooms-to-be “pop the question” over the holiday season and when she says “yes” these couples immediately look to find a reception hall – After she finds a fab dress of course! Plenty of gorgeous couples have been making their way to see Tamara Archer at the Gardens to lock in their 2011 wedding dates, but plenty of great weekends are still available. If you’re a bride-to-be or know of one, have her call Tamara at 205-871-1000 to set up a private tour of the Gardens Café – Where every event is a celebration of taste and style. And while you’re there, have some lunch too! Just because it’s chilly outside doesn’t mean you can’t come on out to the Gardens for some wonderful hospitality and fantastic comfort food. The Café is open for lunch each Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00AM ‘til 2:00PM.
The Kathy G “2011 Speaking Tour” got off to a quick start in January as Kathy hosted two engagements with local Garden Clubs. Discussing “Unique Food Presentations for Entertaining” Kathy’s had lots of fun meeting with both the Cherokee Garden Club as well as the Millbrook Garden Club. She’s had a wonderful turnout for each and all the ladies in attendance seemed to learn something new while having a great time! Read more, click here
