Though we like to think of the Kathy G & Company newsletter as a recap of wonderful celebrations, we’d be remiss if we didn’t open this month’s version by acknowledging the tornadoes that ripped through Tuscaloosa, Cahaba Heights, and other Alabama neighborhoods a just few short weeks ago.
We hope that you and yours were unharmed and feel compelled to mention that, through all the hardship witnessed, we were reminded time and time again why we love Alabama so much – It’s the people. With media from around the world watching round the clock, Alabamians stood strong, sprung to action for those in need, and showed billions across the globe why we are in fact “The Heart of Dixie.”
We always loved Alabama, but over this past month, the people of this fine state have given us nearly five million more reasons!
Thank you to all the rescue workers who risked their own safety and sacrificed so much to help their fellow man. And thank you Alabama, for showing the world what we’re all about.

Kathy G & Company would like to offer a HUGE special thanks to The Mountain Brook Club for coming through and saving the day for one of our special couples, Clair and John. They were to be married April 30th at the Swan Lake Barn in Cahaba Heights, but the tornadoes that struck just three days earlier made that impossible. Upon hearing of the young couple’s bad luck, The Mountain Brook Club stepped in and allowed us to move the entire wedding – all 300+ guests, the catering, and florals - to their beautiful property. We can’t say enough about how wonderful they treated Clair, John and the entire Kathy G team in that most difficult time. To read more, please click here.
When executive catering chef Alan Bullen heard on the radio that Tuscaloosa’s St. Matthias Episcopal Church was in need of food donations for tornado rescues workers, he knew Kathy G & Company had to help out. Sharing this notion, event coordinator Natalie Andrews and Alan packed up a van with dinners for more than 300 volunteers before heading to the Druid City. It was the least our team could do and we’re so very proud of Alan and Natalie for taking the time and making the extra effort to represent Kathy G & Company so wonderfully. We know it’s been tough on our friends in Tuscaloosa, though we’re certain that with a little help, our home away from home will rebound in no time.
Kathy G headquarters was bustling with excitement on Saturday, May 14th, as we had four amazing weddings - Two of which were at the beautiful Aldridge Gardens in Hoover. Rachel and Brent started the day with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony beside the lake before taking the party of more than 100 guests to a reception that can only be described as “stunning”. KG Designs’ Andy Hopper and his team of “elegance experts” designed an outdoor reception to rival any you’ve seen. The translucent “floating table” was the centerpiece of the affair, though the silk draping and brilliant floral was dazzling at every turn. Special thanks to wedding planner extraordinaire, Meghan Cease of M Elizabeth Events, for coordinating all the wonderful details of this most amazing event.

KG Designs is not only making a name as Birmingham’s top wedding floral/design firm… We’re now branching out with upcoming weddings in faraway cities such as Chattanooga, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Clanton, and even Atlanta.
When the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama called to see about us catering the “Pink Palace Casino Goes to Wonderland” charity event, we couldn’t say “yes” quickly enough. On Saturday, May 14th the event was held at the Galleria in Hoover and by all accounts it was a smashing success! As guests played Blackjack, Poker, Craps, Roulette, and even Slot Machines, they were also treated to some of the finest offerings Kathy G & Company serves up. This month’s featured recipe, Shrimp Cakes, were available as were Mini BLT’s, Belgian Endive with Whipped Bleu Cheese & Candied Walnuts, Soy Ginger Marinated Thai Flank Steak in Phyllo Cups, and a Polenta Parmigiana Station. More than 500 guests were on hand and we can only hope that this most amazing night was able to bring the foundation just a bit closer to curing breast cancer. Macey and Chad are a gorgeous couple who just happened to have their wedding reception at one of our all-time favorite Birmingham venues, WorkPlay. On May 21st, 150 of the newly minted Mr. and Mrs. Franklin’s friends and family members joined the young pair for a festive afternoon of eating, drinking, dancing, and fun. Roast Beef with Horseradish Sauce, Grilled Chicken Rollups with Avocado, Tomato & Fresh Mozzarella Canapés, Fresh Pasta Salad with Artichoke Hearts & Sundried Tomatoes, and Hot Spinach & Gruyere Dip were just some of the offerings put forth by the Kathy G team led by event coordinator, Natalie Pilato-Andrews. And to make the day even more special for Macey, her sister acted as official photographer. We’re always thrilled to cater events at WorkPlay and this wedding only reinforced our love affair with the fabulous venue and its superb staff.
If it’s May, we’ve got Mother’s Day circled on our calendar, as nobody loves taking care of moms more than Kathy G & Company. Our special “Mother’s Day Brunch” at the Garden’s Café is always a big hit and this year was no exception. More than 50 moms, grandmas, and even great grandmothers were treated like royalty as families from all over the Birmingham area brought their most special ladies to the special event. Big thanks to Café manager Tamara Archer for managing the big day!!! And don’t forget… If you’ve got a rehearsal dinner, bridal luncheon, reunion, corporate event or even a wedding coming up in the next several months, the Gardens Café makes for a wonderfully unique location – Right in the center of the beautiful Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Call 205-871-1000 for details.
On Friday, May 27th, the Woods and Woolsey families will gather at Park Lane for a rehearsal dinner like no other – A Low Country Shrimp Boil. Cajun Spiced Shrimp, Andouille Sausage, Corn on the Cob, and New Orleans Style Jambalaya are just some of the Cajun favorites being served up to the more than 150 guests that are expected. “Laisse les bons temps rouler!”
On the morning of Saturday, May 21st, Kathy G rounded up some of her best friends in the wedding biz and helped Fox 6 coordinate their 2011 “Spring Wedding Show”. For more than an hour, Kathy and Fox 6 anchor, Karen Church, chatted about what’s hot and what’s not in reception ideas. Joining them for the program were local many experts such as: Alex Gaumon of AG Lighting, Videographer Lance Holloway of Holloway Productions, Photographer Hannah Slamen of Foto Atelier, Brooke Mason of Ivory & White Bridal Boutique, and the authority on all things floral, Andy Hopper of KG Designs.
